Mexico Temporary Residency Calculator

This Mexico temporary residency calculator checks the consular solvency test for 2026: monthly income above 680 UMA, or an average savings balance of 11,460 UMA. The two routes are alternatives. Meeting either one on its own is enough, and the two amounts are never added together.

Read this first — pesos decide, dollars do not.

All thresholds on this page use UMA 2026, in force from February 1, 2026 to January 31, 2027. The peso figures are authoritative. Dollar figures are approximate and dated to October 2026 at about 18.3 pesos per dollar, because each consulate publishes its own dollar figures at its own monthly exchange rate.

This calculator covers temporary residency solvency only. It does not cover permanent residency, and it does not add any amount for family members, because the temporary-residency family add-on is unverified. Confirm permanent figures and any dependent requirement with your consulate before you rely on them.

Your finances, in pesos

Income must be free of liens and demonstrated over the last 6 months. The test is monthly income greater than 680 UMA: more than 79,770.80 pesos per month in 2026. Exactly 79,770.80 does not pass, because the rule requires more than that amount.

This is the average monthly balance over the last 12 months, not a single-day snapshot. The test is an average balance of 11,460 UMA: 1,344,372.60 pesos in 2026. A balance exactly at that figure passes the savings route.

UMA 2026 reference

UMA 2026: 117.31 pesos per day, 3,566.22 pesos per month, 42,794.64 pesos per year. In force February 1, 2026 to January 31, 2027. Income threshold: 680 times 117.31 equals 79,770.80 pesos. Savings threshold: 11,460 times 117.31 equals 1,344,372.60 pesos. Approximate dollar equivalents, dated October 2026 at about 18.3 pesos per dollar: income about 4,360 dollars per month, savings about 73,500 dollars. Pesos are authoritative.

What this checker does not decide

Solvency is only one part of a temporary residency application. The consulate also decides the visa itself, based on its own document list and checks, and this calculator cannot approve a visa or a resident card. A result of qualifies here is not a promise of approval.

This calculator also does not decide permanent residency, does not add dependent amounts, and does not decide how a consulate will treat self-employment or freelance income. Confirm those points with your consulate.

How solvency works — one of two UMA tests, in pesos

Temporary residency through a Mexican consulate abroad asks you to prove solvency in one of two ways. Both ways are measured in UMA, the Mexican unit of measurement and update, not in minimum wage and not in dollars.

UMA 2026 is 117.31 pesos per day. That value comes from the INEGI notice published in the Diario Oficial de la Federación on January 9, 2026, and it is in force from February 1, 2026 to January 31, 2027. A new UMA value is published each January, so every peso threshold on this page changes when UMA changes. That is why this calculator shows the UMA multiples, 680 and 11,460, alongside the peso figures: the multiples survive the next UMA update, while the peso figures do not.

The multiples come from the visa rules. The Lineamientos Generales para la expedición de visas, published in the Diario Oficial on July 25, 2025, set the solvency multiples for the consular temporary residency visa. That July 2025 document is the source of the 680 and 11,460 multiples. It is not the source of the UMA value itself, which comes from the separate INEGI notice of January 9, 2026. Keeping those two sources separate matters, because pages that mix them up also tend to mix up old and new figures.

Average savings or investment balance11,460 UMA1,344,372.60 pesosAverage over last 12 months

The income route: more than 680 UMA per month

The income route asks for monthly income, free of liens, greater than 680 days of UMA, demonstrated over the last 6 months. With UMA 2026 at 117.31 pesos per day, 680 times 117.31 equals 79,770.80 pesos, so monthly income must be more than 79,770.80 pesos per month. Income of exactly 79,770.80 pesos does not pass, because the rule says greater than, not at least.

The income is described as employment or pension income, and it must be free of liens, which means net and unencumbered. How a given consulate treats self-employment or freelance income varies, so a freelancer should confirm treatment with the consulate before relying on an income result. The calculator tests the number only. It cannot judge the source of the income or the documents behind it.

Approximate dollar figure, dated October 2026: at about 18.3 pesos per dollar, more than 79,770.80 pesos is about 4,360 dollars per month. That dollar figure is approximate only. Consulates publish their own dollar figures at their own monthly exchange rate, so two consulates in the same month can show different dollar amounts for the same peso threshold. The peso figure is the one that decides.

The savings route: an average balance of 11,460 UMA

The savings route asks for an average monthly savings or investment balance equivalent to 11,460 days of UMA, over the last 12 months. With UMA 2026 at 117.31 pesos per day, 11,460 times 117.31 equals 1,344,372.60 pesos. A balance exactly at that figure passes the savings route, because the route is set at that average balance, unlike the income route, which requires more than its threshold.

Average means average. A single day above the threshold does not pass if the 12-month average is below it, and a single day below the threshold does not fail if the 12-month average is at or above it. Enter the average monthly balance over the last 12 months, not the highest balance, not the current balance, and not a balance on one statement date.

Approximate dollar figure, dated October 2026: at about 18.3 pesos per dollar, 1,344,372.60 pesos is about 73,500 dollars. As with income, that dollar figure is approximate only, and consulate dollar figures move monthly with their own exchange rate. The peso figure is the one that decides.

Why the two routes are never added together

The visa rules present the income route and the savings route as alternatives: prove one of the listed scenarios. That structure is the whole point of the calculator showing two separate test rows. Income and savings are not pooled, shortfalls are not pooled, and a near miss on both routes is still a miss on both routes.

Example. Monthly income of 79,000 pesos and an average savings balance of 1,340,000 pesos look close on both routes, and together they add up to far more than either threshold. They still do not qualify, because income is below more than 79,770.80 pesos and the average balance is below 1,344,372.60 pesos. Either route alone must pass. This calculator never sums the two inputs, and any calculator that does sum them is applying a rule that does not exist.

The stale figures trap. Pages still quoting 300 days of minimum wage for income and 5,000 days of minimum wage for savings are using the previous rules, before the switch to UMA. Those figures are outdated and must not be used for a 2026 application. The current figures are 680 UMA for income and 11,460 UMA for savings. If a guide, forum post, or calculator still shows 300 or 5,000, treat its peso figures as stale too.

What this checker does not decide

Visa approval. Meeting a solvency threshold is not approval. The consulate decides the visa on its full application, including documents, identity, and any other requirement it applies. This calculator tests two numbers only.

Permanent residency. Permanent residency has different thresholds and a different application. This calculator deliberately does not include permanent figures, because the permanent figures cited from the lineamientos have not been verified from the official text, and consulate figures for permanent routes are higher and vary by consulate and month. Do not use the temporary thresholds on this page for a permanent application.

Family members. This calculator does not add any amount for a spouse, partner, or children, because the temporary-residency family add-on is unverified. If family members will apply with you, confirm any additional requirement with your consulate. Do not guess an add-on and do not copy a permanent-route family figure into a temporary application.

The resident card step. A consular approval gives a visa to enter Mexico. The resident card itself is completed inside Mexico, and its steps and timing are outside this calculator. Confirm the card step with the consulate. The first card is commonly for 1 year, renewable up to 4 years total, after which permanent residency may be possible, but confirm that sequence with INM and the consulate for your case.

How we check — method and sources

This checker follows the temporary residency solvency rules in order:

  1. UMA 2026. Use 117.31 pesos per day, in force February 1, 2026 to January 31, 2027, from the INEGI notice published January 9, 2026.
  2. Income test. Pass only when monthly income, free of liens, is greater than 680 times UMA: more than 79,770.80 pesos per month in 2026, demonstrated over the last 6 months.
  3. Savings test. Pass only when the average monthly savings or investment balance over the last 12 months is at least 11,460 times UMA: 1,344,372.60 pesos in 2026.
  4. Combine. Qualifies when either test passes, or both pass. The two amounts are never added together. A failing test shows its shortfall in pesos and in UMA days.
  5. Do not extend. Permanent figures, dependent add-ons, and consulate dollar conversions are not in this calculator, because they are unverified, or they vary by consulate and month.

Thresholds are computed from UMA, not copied as fixed pesos alone: 680 times 117.31 equals 79,770.80, and 11,460 times 117.31 equals 1,344,372.60. When UMA changes each February, the peso thresholds change with it, while the multiples stay the same. Dollar equivalents on this page use about 18.3 pesos per dollar, dated October 2026, and are approximate only.

Mexico temporary residency calculator — common questions

What income do I need for Mexico temporary residency in 2026?

Monthly income free of liens must be greater than 680 days of UMA, demonstrated over the last 6 months. With UMA 2026 at 117.31 pesos per day, that is more than 79,770.80 pesos per month. Exactly 79,770.80 pesos does not pass.

What savings balance do I need for Mexico temporary residency in 2026?

An average monthly savings or investment balance of 11,460 days of UMA over the last 12 months. With UMA 2026 at 117.31 pesos per day, that is 1,344,372.60 pesos. It must be an average over 12 months, not a single-day snapshot, and a balance exactly at that figure passes.

Can I combine income and savings to meet the test?

No. The income route and the savings route are alternatives. You must meet one of them on its own. Adding income to savings, or adding the two shortfalls together, does not meet the test.

Are the dollar figures exact?

No. The peso figures are authoritative. Dollar equivalents on this page are approximate and dated to October 2026 at about 18.3 pesos per dollar, because consulates publish their own dollar figures at their own monthly exchange rate. Confirm your consulate’s current figures before you apply.

Do the old 300 and 5,000 day minimum wage figures still apply?

No. The previous rules used days of minimum wage. The current rules use days of UMA: 680 UMA for income and 11,460 UMA for savings. Any page still quoting 300 or 5,000 days of minimum wage for temporary residency is outdated.

Does this calculator cover permanent residency?

No. Permanent residency has different thresholds, and the permanent figures cited from the lineamientos have not been verified from the official text. Do not use the temporary residency numbers on this page for a permanent application. Confirm permanent figures with the consulate or INM first.

Does this calculator add an amount for family members?

No. This calculator does not add dependent amounts, because the temporary-residency family add-on is unverified. If family members will apply with you, confirm any additional requirement with your consulate before you rely on a result here.

Where do I apply, and what happens after approval?

Apply at a Mexican consulate abroad. Approval gives you a visa to enter Mexico, and you then complete the resident card step inside Mexico. Confirm the consulate’s document list, the card step, and its timing with the consulate, because those steps are outside this solvency calculator.

Solvency is only one part of an application: the consulate decides the visa, and the resident card step follows inside Mexico. Confirm thresholds, dollar conversions, document lists, dependent requirements, and permanent figures with your consulate or INM before you apply.
